Festivals on the Wadden Islands

The Wadden Islands are not only fun if you like sailing, walking, cycling & surfing. Special events are also organised on a regular basis. On every island you will find a theatre and/or music festival with its own style and there is something for everyone.

Below we have listed a few of them for you. Take a look at the different sites to make sure that all the data is correct, they can change. You can also buy your tickets on the various sites, note that these are often sold out quickly.

 

1. Sommeltjespop – Texel, first weekend of July

Sommeltjespop is the biggest live pop festival on the island Texel. It’s being organised at the beginning of July in the village of ‘de Waal’. Under the guise of watching bands and drinking beer, local artists and new talents as well as established names from the dutch music scene such as Waylon & Moke pass by. This festival is for the true music lover of all ages.

2. Into The Great Wide Open – Vlieland, Last weekend summer holiday region Northern region of the Netherlands

Since 2009 ‘Into The Great Wide Open’ has been organised on Vlieland in August/September. This special festival in the dunes and around Camping Stortemelk is a cosy get-together with good music, visual arts, film, oysters and nature.

It is an initiative of a club of people who know each other from pop music and who have made their dream festival in Vlieland a reality. A festival par excellence to go to with the whole family, children are very welcome here.

3. Oerol Festival – Terschelling, second week of June

The Oerol Festival takes place annually on Terschelling. A festival full of theatre, music, acrobatics, films and installations. The whole island is immersed in a festive atmosphere for 10 days.

Oerol means “everywhere” in the Terschellinger dialect and stems from an old Terschellinger custom. When spring came and the cattle could graze on the meadows outside the villages again, the animals were ‘everywhere’ [Oerol].

4. Rock and Rollstreet – Terschelling, second weekend of September

During the second weekend of September the Rock and Roll Street festival will take place on Terschelling. The village of Midsland is the vibrant heart of this celebration and for the occasion is immersed in the atmosphere of the fifties.

Rock & Roll music, Oldtimers, Solexes and clothing from that time determine the image on the island. Besides the music, there is plenty to do the whole weekend around the theme Rock ‘n Roll. Are you a fan? Then this is the place to be Above all, take your whole family with you in the sidecar, because this is a celebration for the whole family.

5. MadNes Festival – Ameland, first weekend of july

The MadNes Festival is a music festival with all kinds of activities. Fromsurfing and skating to various workshops and much more! The festival was brought to life more than 10 years ago on the beach of Nes after the bright idea of a couple of friendly lifeguards. 6. International chamber music festival- Schiermonnikoog, october and march

The International Chamber Music Festival, is a special festival of an entirely different order. The greatest classical talents from home and abroad, who are making a furore at international competitions, can be admired at this festival for young talent at Schiermonnikoog. Some seventy talents travel from all over the world to the smallest Wadden Island.

In addition to twenty concerts, the festival offers masterclasses, music documentaries, lectures, nature excursions and star walks. Of course, there is always the 30 km of cycle path, 18 km of beach and more than 300 species of birds to marvel at between listening sessions.

7. The Bluescruise – Harlingen & Terschelling, last weekend of September

The Bluescruise, takes place partly onthe traditional sailing ships of the Dutch sailing fleet. No wonder then that the Blues artists also sail with us and on their way to Terschelling they jam on board. That way you can get into the mood.

On Friday evening the Bluescruise starts with performances in various pubs in Harlingen, artists like GG & the cruisers can be found in pubs like the Brouwdok and the Lichtboei.

On Saturday morning a complete Blues cruise armada leaves for Terschelling. At a special location in the harbour, a barbecue is organised, where you can have a nice meal with the rest of the Blues fanatics. In the evening the party continues in various bars on West-Terschelling. On Sunday all Blues come to an end and you sail back to Harlingen.

This event is suitable for the real blues lover, not suitable for children.
